MAY DAY: Chief Uche Nnaji Celebrates Workers, Calls for Industrial Growth and Workers’ Welfare in Enugu
Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji (Nwakaibie), has extended warm greetings to the people of Enugu State, both at home and in the diaspora, in celebration of the 2026 Workers’ Day.
In his May Day message, the respected statesman commended the resilience, enterprise, and unwavering spirit of Enugu workers, acknowledging their vital role in driving the state’s development and economic progress.
Chief Nnaji highlighted the importance of purposeful leadership in creating opportunities, noting that over 1,000 federal job opportunities were facilitated for youths during his time in public service. He emphasized that such efforts were guided by a clear vision to industrialize Enugu State and create sustainable, meaningful employment for its people.
Drawing inspiration from the legacy of Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara, he called for a renewed commitment to productivity, innovation, and prosperity, stressing that Enugu must return to its roots of economic strength and self-reliance.
The former minister also raised concerns over the continued migration of young people in search of opportunities, urging stakeholders to focus on creating jobs locally to retain talent and build the state’s economy.
On workers’ welfare, Chief Nnaji made a strong appeal for the settlement of all outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to civil servants, noting that retirees deserve dignity, respect, and peace of mind after years of service.
“Our retirees must not be left to suffer neglect. Their contributions to the growth of Enugu State must be honored,” he stated.
He concluded with a call for unity and collective responsibility in building a better future for the state, emphasizing the shared destiny of workers, youths, and retirees.
“Our youths. Our workers. Our retirees. Our Enugu. Our future. Let’s build Enugu together,” he declared, while wishing all workers a happy Workers’ Day.
