NANS Condemns Alleged Brutality By UNN Security Operatives on Nigerian Students, Demands Immediate Justice

A wave of condemnation has trailed the alleged ill treatment of a student at the University ofNigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), following the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing security operatives subjecting the student to what observers have described as degrading and excessive force.

The incident, which has sparked widespread anger among students and stakeholders, reportedly occurred after the victim allegedly used an unauthorized route within the campus. However, critics argue that the response of the security personnel was grossly disproportionate, unprofessional, and in clear violation of the rights and dignity of the student.

Eyewitness accounts and footage from the viral video suggest that the student was physically assaulted, with his mobile device allegedly damaged during the encounter. The development has since ignited debates on the conduct of campus security agencies and the need for urgent reforms to safeguard students from abuse.

Reacting strongly to the development, the Nationa Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Enugu State Chapter, issued a scathing statement condemning the incident and calling for immediate accountability.

The student body warned that failure by the university authorities to act decisively could trigger legitimate mass action by students seeking justice.

PRESS RELEASE

NANS JCC Enugu State Condemns Inhumane Treatment of UNEC Student, Demands Swift Justice

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), Enugu State Chapter, has taken serious notice of a disturbing viral video circulating across social media platforms, depicting the degrading and inhumane treatment of a student of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC) by security operatives.

Following careful monitoring, intelligence gathering, and preliminary investigations, it was reported that the victim allegedly used an unauthorized route within the campus. However, rather than enforcing regulations within the bounds of professionalism and civility, the security personnel involved resorted to excessive force, as clearly seen in the video. The student was physically assaulted and his mobile device damaged in the process.

As the foremost advocate for the welfare, rights, and dignity of Nigerian students, NANS JCC Enugu State unequivocally condemns in the strongest terms this barbaric, degrading, and unacceptable act. No circumstance justifies such brutality against a student, and such conduct stands in direct violation of the principles of human rights and institutional integrity.

This unfortunate incident has not only brought disrepute to the revered University of Nigeria but also risks eroding public confidence in the institution’s commitment to student safety and discipline. If left unaddressed, it could further diminish the hard-earned reputation of the university on both national and international fronts.

While we urge our law-abiding and peaceful student populace to remain calm and refrain from any form of unrest, we assure them of our unwavering commitment to pursuing justice through all appropriate channels.

In light of the above, we call on the management of the University of Nigeria, particularly the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UNEC, to immediately launch a thorough investigation into this matter and ensure that all security personnel found culpable are held accountable in accordance with the law.

Failure to take prompt and decisive action will leave the student community with no option but to explore legitimate avenues of mass action to demand justice.

NANS JCC Enugu State remains resolute in its duty to protect the rights, dignity, and welfare of all students.

Signed:
Comr. Okeke Kelvin Chekwube
Chairman, NANS JCC Enugu State Chapter

Date: April 27, 2026

The incident has intensified calls for institutional accountability and respect for student rights across Nigerian campuses, with many insisting that swift disciplinary action against those responsible will serve as a deterrent to future misconduct and restore confidence in campus security systems.
