FG Declares Friday Public Holiday for Workers’ Day Celebration
The Federal Government has declared Friday a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually across the globe.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
In the statement, the minister congratulated Nigerian workers for their unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to national development, emphasizing that their efforts remain central to the country’s growth and prosperity. He urged workers to continue to uphold values such as patriotism, productivity, and commitment, noting that these are critical to achieving sustainable development.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare and security of workers while fostering an enabling environment for economic progress. Citizens were encouraged to remain peaceful and law abiding during the holiday and to reflect on the importance of unity and diligence in nation building.
The public holiday will enable workers across both public and private sectors to participate in activities marking the occasion. International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is observed every May 1 to honour the contributions of workers and to highlight issues surrounding labour rights, workplace conditions, and economic advancement.
In Nigeria, the celebration is typically marked by rallies, speeches, and engagements between labour unions and government representatives, focusing on key concerns such as wages, pensions, and working conditions.
This year’s observance comes amid ongoing national discussions on minimum wage implementation, workers’ welfare, and broader economic challenges, further underscoring the significance of the celebration as a platform for dialogue and policy reflection.
